As if an influx of nasty rats wasn’t enough, our town’s also been invaded by giant, multi-colored plastic cows. I can’t explain what’s going on anymore.

This bothers you?

No, I love the cows. Cows are cool.
I don’t like the rats, though.

Actually, I was just in Istanbul and saw the same cows. When I returned, I saw in the Courant that these are all from the same organization that is headquartered in West Hartford! Small world. However, Istanbul has cows and traffic calming but we only have cows.

Slowpoke. I “reported” about this days ago…
Where I’m originally from in Vermont, they have a llama parade. I wonder if it’s organized by the same company?

Amy,
I’m moving at a cow’s pace these days. But as the weather turns increasingly brisk, I plan to kick it up a notch or two.

We took our daughters to see them yesterday. What a fantastic job by local artists and sponsors! Hard to pick a favorite with so many creative and colorful choices! To those who helped “bring the cows home” – Thanks for adding beauty to West Hartford Center!

“Cow Chips” bar none.

The good ole cows. Why we had to do this again so soon is beyond me.
However, I must say that having worked in the Center this past Sunday, my store did very well with the touristas coming in and buying. Usually, they are only browsers. I think the weather had a great deal to do with it and the fact that there are so many newbies in WH. These are the ones who weren’t here for the last go ’round (or the BBS vote!-had to toss that in!)
Don’t get me wrong, I love public art. But cows again just don’t work for me. We could have used a tad more creativity in the animal department.
But we will suffer through the cows for the next 4+ months. It’s better than most graffiti. And we can use whatever stimulates the Center.

We could have had a giant bear, but no!

Better cows than “giant, multi-colored plastic” rats!
September 18, 2007 at 2:59 pm
I’m sure we could even paint the real ones once the bait has been laid!
September 18, 2007 at 3:42 pm
Well, they’re not multi-colored, but…

What do cows have to do with West Hartford? There hasn’t been a cow here in 100 years. How about a bunch of blank Lexuses to decorate? Or…. I know… lawn signs!!!!!
September 18, 2007 at 4:59 pm
Barrel-a-bunga, in which all residents decorate their “giant, multi-colored plastic” new robot-ready garbage cans and display them at the end of their driveways. We can then advertise a Town-wide ar show and bring in the tourists.
September 18, 2007 at 5:04 pm
sorry, that was “art show.”
September 20, 2007 at 4:14 pm
Now I like that! A town-wide contest to decorate our new garbage cans! That’ll show the rest of the towns!
September 20, 2007 at 9:36 pm
I know (or at least I think) that folks are joking it, but that is actually a pretty neat idea! Those cans are pretty drab and industrial looking. I wonder if homeowners would catch heck if they spruced them up a bit?
September 21, 2007 at 7:35 am
by the way, the rats are NOT just in the new park/new britain ave/flatbush ave areas…………

I think I am going to try some multi-colored duct tape designs on mine, and see what happens.

To all West Hartford Residents
The Candidates for Town Council are taping the debates starting this Monday.
If any residents have questions or concerns of Candidates please feel free to post them here and I will try to address these questions during the debates (within the confines of the League of Women Voter questions/issue’s).
The League has suggested some key issues and area’s of concern but your input today can help me and other Candidates address many problems with your input in mind.
Some have posted here thoughts of Gay Rights , Global warming and other National Issues regarding Party lines, I will be happy to go there if appropriate.

Lets try to keep frank political discussion out of this forum. It is my understanding that this is not a political blog. Maybe whdad can add a link for the west hartford candidates to post?

Hey Now
Skip reading political posts if they offend you. If the Blog Master wants to filter folks or me it’s up to him. Have a nice day, and don’t forget to vote on Novemebr 6th!

“…keep frank political discussion out of this forum…”
This Town needs more “frank political discussion,” not less.
But I do agree we need a fresh post where some of us could respond to Joe’s request for questions/concerns for the upcoming debates.

Joe, here are three issues that are on my mind in deciding who to vote for in the next election. I hope you and some of the other candidates can address these issues in the upcoming debates.
Unfair Allocation of Tax Burden to Residential Homeowners
Concern: Last year’s budget fight resulted in a zero percent increase in Town revenues, the inevitable consequence of which has been the diminution of the quality of services and education provided by this Town. But to add insult to injury, residential home owners are getting stuck with a 6.4% tax increase, while the business property owners in this Town enjoy a tax decrease, due to the recent reassessments and reallocation of the tax burden in the business interests’ favor.
Question: In light of the recent drop in residential real estate values–coupled with the widely reported demands by commercial property owners for dramatic rental rate increases–what can be done to provide a more equitable allocation of the tax burden in this Town between residential home-owners and business property owners?
Addressing Racial Imbalance by Discriminating Against Neighborhood Schools
Concern: Despite the difficult budget cycle last year, the School Board still found money to significantly enhance the magnet programs at Charter Oak and Smith. And despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent admonishment that it is unconstitutional to address discrimination (real, societal or otherwise) by discriminating against others (“…the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race…”), the Board is back at it again this year proposing additional enhancements to the educational programs in only two of the eleven elementary schools in West Harford.
Question: Do you support the Board of Education’s plans to complete another round of enhancements to the educational programs at Charter Oak and Smith to the exclusion of the remaining nine neighborhood elementary schools in West Hartford?
Neighborhood Speeding
Concern: There is only one issue in this Town that I have seen almost universal agreement on and that is the need to address the problem of neighborhood speeding. Yet nothing is ever done by our public officials to address this problem.
Question: Before this Town suffers the tragedy of one of our children being run over by someone speeding through a residential neighborhood, what do you propose to do to address this problem?

I didn’t realize cow discussions could be so political.
I appreciate their presence. It gives you something to look at during what would normally be a somewhat non-entertaining walk through the center.

Those cows are utterly ridiculous. No pun intended.
